The theme of the International Day of Peace 2020 is “Shaping Peace Together” and has been dedicated to fostering dialogue and collecting ideas as the world continues to struggle to defeat COVID-19. It is also the 20th Anniversary of the UN Resolution on the Program of Action on a Culture of Peace (A/RES/53/243 B), which was led by UNESCO, and continues to inspire engagement on the promotion of a culture of peace in Africa. Consecutively, the African Union’s 2020 theme of the year is “Silencing the Guns” and reminds the continent and its people of their commitment to the building of the Africa We Want, enshrined in Agenda 2063.

This year’s celebration reminds us clearly that we are not each other’s enemies, and that the common enemy is a tireless virus that continues to threaten our health and security, lives and livelihoods, displace and endanger our people and communities, and disrupt our way of life. COVID-19 has reminded us that what happens in one part of the world can impact people everywhere.

Program Design

The narrative of shaping peace together reiterates the need for an intergenerational drive for co-creation, co-ownership, collective action and shared leadership in the promotion of peace in Africa. The aim is to facilitate an open discussion where experiences and ideas are shared and validated by community members. It is designed as a community gathering away from the traditional Panelists-Attendees strategy, allowing for more young people to share their experiences, bringing to the idea of a community of practice to life.

It would enhance meaningful engagement and spotlight creative ways to enhance the engagement of youth at the local/community level, at the national level and at the global level especially in formal political mechanisms as well as across all thematic development areas. It would also provide a safe platform to have a peer-to-peer conversation on how we can co-create and co-own the process to peace especially with the impact of COVID-19.

The program will focus on three (3) thematic areas:

  • Dialogue for Intergenerational Co-ownership on building a Peaceful Society
  • The Process of Sustainable Peacebuilding: A Generation that is Building the Future We Want
  • Socio-economic Challenges of building Peace: The trajectory for rebuilding societies Post-Pandemic
