Position Summary

IREX seeks qualified Field Director candidates for a global, cross-sectoral USAID Youth in Development Activity. This project will design and apply an approach to using implementation research to strengthen cross-sectoral positive youth development programming, help youth-led and youth-serving organizations use implementation research, and synthesize and promote findings broadly. The Field Director will be based in either Kenya, Jordan, or Tunisia, and will provide day-to-day implementation oversight and leadership.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Serve as core member of project leadership team responsible for providing strategic and technical leadership to the project, including a large consortium and government/private sector partners.
  • Serve as liaison with USAID, IREX’s consortium, and key stakeholders, including youth-led and youth-serving organizations, local government officials and private sector partners, as well as other donors and implementers.
  • Develop strong collaborative, supportive, and mutually respectful relationships with diverse team members, with other leaders at IREX, and with leaders at key stakeholder and partner organizations.
  • Ensure project activities are implemented on schedule and within budget.
  • Collaboratively oversee project budgeting and forecasting, financial management, compliance and subgrants management and ensure contractual compliance, all with increasing responsibility.
  • Co-direct private sector engagement strategy with increasing responsibility.
  • Co-direct monitoring, evaluation, and reporting with increasing responsibility.
  • Lead and facilitate project co-design processes, including iterative learning and adaptation.
  • Lead specific project components.
  • Lead Global Youth Advisory Council (GYAC) coordination/management.
  • Ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the project.
  • Supervise, manage, and mentor project staff; lead recruitment of specialized technical staff.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be a citizen of or permanent resident with work authorization in either Kenya, Jordan, or Tunisia.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience required.
  • Successful track record of at least three (3) years supervising, managing, and/or implementing social impact oriented projects in education, employment, civic and political engagement, gender, health, and/or agriculture/food security within the development, social enterprise, and/or business sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience in youth-led research, youth-led assessments, implementation research, and/or participatory action research.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in Positive Youth Development (PYD) approaches that support youth to contribute to their full potential and/or with youth-led data synthesis and youth-led advocacy/communications.
  • Proven leadership qualities including a leadership style that is empowering to team members and follows principles of Positive Youth Development.
  • A positive attitude to take initiative and work effectively within a team.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated empathy and cultural competence to facilitate inclusive collaboration with diverse team members.
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop collaborative, supportive, and mutually-respectful relationships with other diverse adult and youth leaders.
  • Excellent record managing and building high-performance teams and working to build the capacity of colleagues.
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with senior officials in government, with civil society organizations, international donors, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset, to plan strategically and creatively to meet project objectives, with a focus on innovation.
  • Experience with budget and/or subgrant management preferred.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and provide written reporting in English is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; master’s degree highly preferred.
