The “Salaam Fellowship for Conflict Resolution” aims to bring together high potential young people from the U.S. and Morocco for the purpose of increasing mutual respect and understanding between our countries. Ideal participants will possess a desire to be better communicators, and will be committed to learning in fellowship with their counterparts. Further, they may be students of business, law, foreign affairs, or another relevant area of study.
The goal of the Fellowship is to equip participants with critical competencies in conflict resolution and negotiation at both the interpersonal and intergroup level, taking care to examine the cultural implications involved. Through open dialogue, interactive workshops, and real world application of the material, participants will develop a solid foundation in conflict management through a cross-cultural and international lens.

PROGRAM FEATURES
- A week-long program held in Morocco hosted by the Open Hands Initiative.
- 20 participants – 10 from the U.S. and 10 from Morocco—aged 18-30 years old.
- The program is free for participants and will include hotel, transport, meals, and training costs.
- Speakers and panelists to include representatives from academia, think tanks, non-profits, the media, international organizations, and both the public and private sectors.
- A team-based capstone project will provide an opportunity for community engagement and deeper understanding and application of the material.
- Opportunities for cultural engagement and special closing event with keynote speaker.

The Open Hands Initiative has engaged a variety of collaborators from the U.S. and Morocco to help develop and deliver the program. Partners shall be announced shortly.
TENTATIVE ITINERARY & CURRICULUM
- Days 1-3 – Skills Training: Foundations of Conflict Resolution, Conflict Mapping & Analysis, Negotiation Primer, Mediation, Leadership in Conflict Management, Critical Skills for Effective Communication
- Day 4 – Topical Panels: Current Issues in Conflict Resolution and Negotiation
- Day 5 – Site Visits: Governments and Int. Organizations, Businesses, and Other Relevant Entities
- Day 6 – Community Engagement: Preparations for Capstone Project
- Day 7 –Capstone Project: Team Project & Community Engagement
- Day 8 – Wrap Up: Reflections & Final Event
The Open Hands Initiative aims to provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for personal and professional growth. By participating in the fellowship, you will learn about other cultures, add valuable experience to your resume, create new connections, and gain valuable skills. We ask that fellows be ready for an intense, but enriching experience. You should also be prepared to serve as an ambassador for your country. In exchange for your time and commitment, the Open Hands Initiative covers the costs for:
- All training, speaker fees, and materials, as well as cultural activities.
- Travel costs: For Americans, round-trip economy class flight from New York JFK, Washington, DC, Boston, or Miami to Casablanca, Morocco and back. For Moroccans, regional transportation to the program start location and transportation back home at the end of the program.
- Local ground transportation throughout Morocco.
- Daily breakfast, lunch and most dinners. Two evenings have no scheduled activities and dinners those evenings will be at the participants’ individual expense.
- Double occupancy lodging at 4-star hotel. Please note that each room will house one Moroccan and one American of the same sex.
Fellows will be responsible for all other costs, such as transportation to and from their home airport, international calling plans, entertainment outside of the program, laundry services, passport fees, (if required), and souvenirs.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Before submitting your application, please review the eligibility requirements. We encourage young people with an interest in business, law, foreign affairs, public service, and the charitable sector to consider applying.
- Citizen of Morocco or the United States (dual nationals will be considered)
- 18-30 years old. College students encouraged to apply.
- Proficiency in English.
- Availability from October 24-November 3, 2019.
- Expressed interest in cross-cultural exchange and learning in fellowship with others.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in your community, school, or workplace.
- Professional or volunteer work that reflects an interest in and/or experience in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, mediation, negotiation or related field.

TIMELINE:
- Applications are due by midnight EST July 14, 2019.
- Final decisions will be announced by July 31, 2019.
- Fellowship Dates: October 24 to November 3, 2019 (inclusive of travel from the United States).
- Moroccans should expect to arrive in Rabat by 4:00pm on October 25.
- Orientation will take place virtually in September 2019.
*Acceptance to the program is contingent upon signing a liability waiver, code of conduct agreement, and media release form.
