2018 Africans Rising Activist in Residence Program

The Activist in Residence program is an initiative of Africans Rising for Justice, Peace and Dignity in partnership with the Training Centre for Development Cooperation (MS TCDC). It is set in the full knowledge of the multiple struggles and demands from groups of activists and human rights defenders.  It wishes to help strengthen the infrastructure of societal transformation by providing a time and space to recharge, re-energize and recuperate CSO leaders, human rights defenders, activists, and artists.

The AiR will hopefully be an opportunity for the activists to reflect upon their different contextual challenges in the pursuit of justice, peace and dignity in creating the Africa we want.

The second edition of this 4-week program will be held in Arusha, Tanzania between November 8th to 30th November 2018 and will bring together 10 activists from 10 different African countries to build their mental, physical, digital and strategic resilience.

The goals of this year’s program are to:

  • Provide activists with space and time to reflect on their work and perhaps to pursue new strategies to better serve their communities.
  • Provide an opportunity for progressive CSO leaders and activists to interact with one another to co-learn from common experiences.
  • Provide activists with the theoretical and technical knowledge to reinforce their digital and physical security.
  • Provide activists with tools and resources to develop coping skills and build their mental resilience.
  • Create an opportunity to explore innovative campaigning and mobilizing which transcends survival.
  • Train the activists to write their story, reaffirm their narrative and obtain respite from their demanding and stressful life.
  • Provide space for Knowledge curation and Learning

It’s expected that at the end of the AiR Program; the activists can face the impediments to change in a more efficient way. They will also explore the failures and miscarriages of social movements. The ultimate goal is to build an activist toolkit or a protest manual through an ideation process to identify new resistance strategies.  The activists will contextualize their training upon their return home and will always be part of our movement’s growth.

This year’s AiRs, much like last year’s cohort, will have the time to pursue their own interests and obligation while benefiting from a period of reflection. A state of the art office space, all the facilities at MS TCDCTraining Centre and have full access to the physical collections and online resources of the TCDC Library.
