Afrika Youth Movement Statement On Protests In Togo | Diplomacy Opportunities

#TogoDebout

The cup of dictatorship in Togo has reached its apex and recently the people have decided to stand as one voice to bring democratic change through a protest against another mandate of the sitting president. President Faure Gnassingbe has been in power for over 12 years having taken over from his father’s 37-year reign and both have abused power, to the detriment of the masses.

We, Afrika Youth Movement, a pan-African youth movement of over 10,000 members from 40 countries, identify with the plight of our fellow compatriots in Togo. We have decided to join our voice to that of the people of Togo – to call on the government to respect its citizens’ rights by bringing the change they seek through the termination of this 50-year dictatorial regime.

The role of a democratic government goes beyond propaganda, torture, oppressing people’s rights and other ills currently demonstrated by the Togolese government. It is a cry for help by the people, subjected to oppression, and has not known change for half a century (50 years).

We applaud the strength of Togolese citizens standing together for what is their right and what they deserve as the backbone of the nation. We support the move towards bringing freedom of choice to a country that has long been overshadowed by its callous leadership.

We condemn any punitive measures against ordinary people who are fighting for change -. We invite all Africans to stand up against dictatorships and stand for collective action to end oppressive systems that only benefit a few.

What purpose can a government serve if it is not for the people and does not listen to the people?

The people of Togo have spoken and CHANGE is what they want. It is time for Africa at large and for Togo, in particular, to rise up and we are ensuring that this happens. We support the people of Togo in solidarity and action and call on the rest of Africa and citizens o around the globe to join us in making history in Togo.

  1. Really this is an act of hypocrisy; at a time when such killings, humiliation and autocratic system was melted out to the indigenous people of Biafra where were they African youths and their so called statement.

Until we learn that an injustice done to one is an injustice to all, we ll achieve nothing
