United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI)

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) accepts a limited number of unpaid interns for 3 semesters – Spring, Summer and Fall – each year.

The objective of the internship programme is to enhance the educational experience of qualified students from diverse academic backgrounds through practical work assignments and on-the-job experience, to expose them to the work of the United Nations and to provide UNICRI with the assistance of highly qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

To be considered for the UNICRI Internship Programme, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • Have graduated with a university degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctorates, or equivalent) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation


At least two months with a possibility of further extension for a maximum period of up to six months.

Applications must indicate the Internship Opening reference number. Applications that do not quote the reference number and/or are received after the deadline will not be considered.

II. Selection

  • The applicants shall submit to UNICRI the application form vis-à-vis Internship Openings posted on UNICRI website.
  • The relevant hiring manager shall review the applications.
  • Shortlisted candidates shall be contacted for telephone interview.
  • Human Resources will check eligibility of selected candidates.

III. Completion of the programme

  • Upon completion of the internship the interns are required to prepare a report on their activities. The supervisors of the interns are requested to certify the content of the report.

UNICRI will not bear any cost for the internship and all expenses connected with it must be borne by the intern.

IV. Administration

  • Monitoring
    The intern will be assigned to the direct supervision of a UNICRI staff member under the overall guidance of the Director.
  • Working hours
    Interns carry out their assignments according to the schedule of working hours agreed upon with their supervisors; the programme is normally full-time. Interns must provide written notice in case of illness or other unavoidable circumstances, which prevent them from observing these working hours.
  • Visa and travel
    Interns are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas and must comply with local Italian laws concerning police registration. Costs and arrangements for travel, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns.
  • Insurance
    The United Nations accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from injury, illness or death that may occur during an internship. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance coverage to cover the full period of the internship at the duty station and provide a medical certificate of good health prior to the commencement of the internship.
  • Use of the UNICRI library
    Interns shall be granted access to UNICRI library and its online catalogues.
  • Conduct
    Interns are required to conduct themselves, at all times, in a manner that is compatible with their responsibilities as UNICRI interns and in accordance with the standards of conduct of international civil servants.
  • Confidentiality
    Interns are required to keep confidential any and all unpublished information acquired during the course of their internships and may not publish any reports or papers on the basis of information obtained, unless authorized to do so by UNICRI. Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate UNICRI staff member, interns may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external party any information that has become known to them by reason of their association with UNICRI that they know or ought to have known has not been made public. Interns may not use any such information without the written authorization of the appropriate official, and such information may never be used for personal gain. These obligations also apply after the end of the internship with UNICRI.
  • Privileges and immunities
    Interns are not staff members and therefore are not entitled to any privileges and immunities extended by the host country to UNICRI staff members.
